Minamiyamashiro-mura is located at the southeast end of Kyoto Prefecture and is the only village in Kyoto Prefecture.

It is adjacent to Nara Prefecture on the south, to Shiga Prefecture on the north, and to Mie Prefecture on the east.

The area code, 0743, applies to the whole area of Minamiyamashiro-mura (local number is 95; Nara Second Message Area). Kasagi-cho, Ikoma City, Tenri City, Yamatokoriyama City, Yamazoe-mura, Nara City (formerly Tsukigase-mura and Tsuge-mura), and Shijonawate City (Tawaradai area and area under the control of Ikoma telephone station) in Osaka Prefecture are all designated as local calls.
